Waltham Forest expands eCash card scheme
7 Jul 2009
A three-year-old eCash smart card scheme in Waltham Forest is being expanded, it has been revealed.
The Waltham Forest resident card, called OneCard, complies with the Your London Card design, ensuring interoperability with initiatives in other boroughs.
It was initially created as an eCash smart card for payments of council tax and rent, doubling as identity cards for employees of the council itself.
However, following three years of success, it is being expanded to be used to issue electronic licences to bars and off-licences.
It has also been adopted to facilitate cashless catering in two secondary schools, with more educational institutions expected to take up the technology in the coming months.
Overall, more than 20,000 of the smart cards have been issued for cashless catering, eMoney and licensing purposes.
Waltham Forest borough council explains that cards issued to pupils have the school logo on the front and can double to allow access to buildings along with their eMoney payment capabilities.
