UK festivals moving towards cashless catering
30 Jun 2010

Music festivals are set to begin promoting cashless catering from next summer as they seek to phase out cash, it has been reported.

According to the BBC, festival goers will be able to pay for food, drink, clothes and other entertainments using eMoney, with payments likely to be made via wristbands that are given out at these events and also serve as tickets.

Music lovers will be able to pre-load their wristband with money and then begin making ePayments, the news provider reported.

None of the organisers between the major UK festivals have yet confirmed that their events will be cash free.

However, industry sources suggest that at least two events - believed to be the Wireless and Download festivals - are likely to be 100 per cent cash free from next year.

Festival Republic, which conducted a trial at the Hove festival in Norway last year, told the BBC: "It was very straightforward, there was no opposition at all.

"The reality is that we are all looking at cashless activity in the UK. It will definitely happen. It's just a matter of time."

As well as removing the risk for festival goers of carrying around large amounts of cash, ePayments at music events could also massively cut down on queuing time.
