Smart card industry reports growth during recession
24 May 2010
The smart card industry reported positive growth in all markets last year despite the recession, according to new figures.
Eurosmart, the smart card association representatives, reported that the increase in smart card shipments is expected to continue throughout 2010.
The contactless smart card sector recorded the largest share of the industry as 265 million secure microprocessor units were shipped last year.
An official statement explained how the benefits of the technology have resulted in high shipment figures.
It said: "A driver [in market growth] is contactless dual interface that enables convenient and fast payment and mass transit applications."
Overall, 740 million memory and 4520 million microprocessor units, which are more secure and versatile than the memory based devices, were shipped throughout 2009.
Eurosmart estimates microprocessor shipments will increase to 4995 million units by the end of the year.
